Careers advice 'should take into account non-university options'

It is important for schools to offer comprehensive careers advice which does not overemphasise the importance of obtaining a university degree, an expert has claimed.

Sarah Clover, spokesperson for www.notgoingtouni.co.uk, has highlighted the fact that those who choose an alternative route often do not receive enough support, those looking at retail sales jobs may be interested to discover.

She suggested that the lack of attention given to these options in schools is creating the negative impressions that school and college leavers have of these institutions.

"We need to make students aware of all of the options available and start to balance the skills of our young people with the roles which need filling," she explained.

Pat McFadden, business, innovation and skills minister, also recently emphasised the importance of those with vacancies being able to find candidates with the right skills, describing this as essential to securing future economic growth.
