Ex-bosses can 'make or break sales recruitment chances'

Sales recruitment hopefuls looking for their next opportunity should be careful not to burn bridges with ex-bosses, according to an industry expert.

Margaret Harris, writing for the careers section of Times Live, said that when compiling a CV, references are vital and their absence will signal that the person has something to hide.

She added that if the candidate appears to have the right experience and skills, the human resources department will then try to contact referees, however, their omission could cost a person the job.

Vicki Marais-Swanepoel, managing director of PAG, a recruitment solutions provider, said that candidates should try to give one reference for each job and even one for each position within an organisation.

She added that it also important that the referees' contact details are kept up-to-date so that they can be contacted quickly by the sales recruitment team.

Erin Joyce, writing for Forbes, added that references should always be listed on a separate page to job history and qualification information.
