Baroness Scotland 'offers lessons for sales jobs employers'

Employers hiring for sales jobs should learn from the Baroness Scotland case and ensure they conduct the necessary checks, an expert advises.

Chris Hitchins and Rachel Ashwood, an employment partner and an associate at Morgan Lewis, respectively, highlight the importance of requesting the relevant documents.

These should be obtained to ensure that the sales job applicant is permitted to work in the UK, they advise.

Copies must be made of these documents and retained during and for at least two years following the period of employment.

Mr Hitchins and Ms Ashwood state: "Where an individual does not have the right to stay indefinitely in the UK … the employer must carry out [these steps] on at least an annual basis."

There could be an increase in the number of sales jobs applications these businesses receive, as New Nation's Power List member Piers Linney recently claimed that a new generation of entrepreneurs are inspiring ethnic minority individuals to apply for sales jobs.
