Being factual is 'vital in applications after illness'

People wanting to get sales jobs after a long layoff need to remain emotionless and factual when they are explaining their medical history to prospective employers, according to one newspaper.

The Guardian gave the advice to a female reader who wanted tips on how to present her six month absence from work due to illness when applying for roles, such as sales jobs.

It stated: "You should make it clear on your CV that you were away from work for six months and give the reason. I suspect it's the highly charged word 'cancer' that's causing you concern, so keep your explanation factual and unemotional."

The newspaper recommended writing about the illness as if an applicant had been off work with something less emotive, like a broken leg, adding that any explanation should be short and to the point.

In other sales recruitment news, Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, recently said graduates need to carefully choose which jobs they apply for rather than going for every role they see.
