Sales jobs: People who volunteer have the edge

Employers for sales jobs are impressed by people who take the time to volunteer, with more than 80 per cent of companies saying they think giving time away for free is a great way to find work, according to new research.

Around 84 per cent of employers said that candidates for sales jobs can benefit from volunteering in the survey commissioned by the volunteering charity Time Bank.

Helen Walker, chief executive of Time Bank, said: "It [volunteering] demonstrates passion and commitment because you're willing to give your time to a project despite it being unpaid, and it also gives you the chance to develop the soft skills needed in a work environment."

She added that giving your own time is a great way to stand out in sales jobs interviews and can help to build confidence and focus on achieving the job you want.

Time Bank recently celebrated the success of its youth volunteering projects at the Proud Galleries in Camden with an urban fete, which displayed young people's ideas on how to encourage the next generation of volunteers.
