More jobseekers 'looking long term'

Graduate jobseekers are planning their future careers more carefully as a result of the difficult economic climate, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by professional services consultancy KPMG indicates candidates are placing an emphasis on training and development when looking for a graduate scheme place - ahead of job security and salary.

Studies indicated that 43 per cent of students value training, well ahead of job security (28 per cent) and salary (11 per cent).

Ruth Elwood, head of recruitment at the company, commented: "It is striking that students rate training and development as more important than job security or even salary.

"Clearly the recession is making them think about their long-term prospects, not just their first job."

Earlier this week, jobseekers' advice website CollegeJobBank.com advised that recent graduates can improve their chances of finding employment by being willing to work their way up from a lower position in a firm.
