References 'make or break job applications'

A jobseeker's references are likely to determine whether a candidate is offered the position they are aiming for, it has been claimed.

Writing for Thomas Net, reporter Jorina Fontelera commented that a referee should be knowledgeable of a candidate's abilities and strengths, confirm information on a CV, provide an accurate assessment of the jobhunter's work and be as contactable as possible.

She went on to say that the best referees are people able to discuss work-related qualities.

The website went on to report comments by Employment News that lists of referees should be refreshed regularly.

"Don't assume old contacts will want to be on your list again or that they will be the right fit for future job searches," the news provider adds.

Last week, Peter Panayotou, senior consultant for The Write Stuff, commented that jobseekers should keep the length of their CVs to around two pages in order to maximise their impact.
