Public sector careers 'offer graduate opportunities'
The public sector offers attractive employment opportunities for graduates, it has been claimed.
According to the Independent, Charlie Ball, deputy research director of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, stated that people with virtually any type of degree can be used effectively within local government and the NHS, the Highways Agency or the Medicines Control Agency.
He added: "The working culture may not be quite the same as many private sector organisations, but often it's not as different as people think.
"This sector has professionalised a lot in recent years, especially with tighter budgets leading to greater efficiency."
Mr Ball went on to say that while the general perception of the public sector may be that it is staid, the reality is different.
Last week, Corinne Mills, human resources advisor at recruitment firm Monster, claimed that in certain circumstances it can be safer to seek new employment than remain in a current role.
She added that a change in career can be achieved successfully with planning, adding that taking a relevant course or doing work experience can improve prospects.
