Immediate job creation 'vital'

The government should focus on creating jobs immediately rather than supporting the long-term unemployed, it has been claimed.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), people are more likely to be offered a job if they are already in work.

Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the REC, said one of the major issues for the group is what can be done to help people who have been out of the labour market for six months to be recruited.

He added: "The best cure is avoidance - to make sure that people stay in the world of work and reinvigorate it very quickly, rather than after six months."

Mr Hadley went on to say the government has taken on board recommendations by the group that flexible working can play a role in helping people get back into employment quickly.

Under new government proposals released earlier this month by the Department for Work and Pensions, jobseekers who find themselves unemployed for over six months will be guaranteed more support so they can get back in to work.
