Generation Y 'prefers office work'

New recruits tend to prefer the sense of community in an office to working from home when they join a company, it has been claimed.

According to David Cumberbatch, a business psychologist speaking on behalf of Vodafone, younger people especially tend to want more of a traditional working structure when they begin a new job.

"From the perspective of it enabling their development, it enables them to have more guidance, more structure, more focus to their day and to their working life," he added.

Mr Cumberbatch went on to say younger and newer workers also want the sense of community provided by an office, which can enhance their social life and their interactions with colleagues.

The 2008 Working Nation Report, published by mobile communications company Vodafone earlier this month, found that one-in-five of the generation just entering the workforce - Generation Y - believe that the inexorable rise of flexible-working practices could ultimately damage the sense of community at work.
