Retail motor industry footfall 'remains high'

The number of potential buyers visiting car vendors has remained constant, an expert says.

Sales jobs in the motor industry are facing less hardship than many teams in other sectors, a spokesman for the Retail Motor Industry Federation claims.

Efforts to counter the effect of requiring buyers to place a larger deposit are succeeding, he says.

He states vendors in sales jobs are reducing prices and offering better deals, which is offsetting the negative impact of the change.

The representative says: "Footfall is actually remaining constant."

"Most of the businesses [in the industry] haven't seen a great drop - it's actually stayed the same," he adds.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show the new car market has fallen 18.6 per cent but it claims August is one of the quietest months in the sector.

While he acknowledges this fall in sales, he says sales in other areas of the sector which benefit from people retaining cars for longer have benefited.

Earlier in the month, a spokesperson for the Institute of the Motor Industry claimed there would be an increase in demand for customer service positions such as sales jobs.
