University choice 'may influence CV lies'

The ranking of a graduate's university may influence their willingness to lie on their CV, it has been suggested.

In news that may interest applicants for sales jobs, Powerchex's managing director Alexandra Kelly has commented that people from high profile higher education institutions appear less likely to distort the facts when applying for a job.

Research from the company found that, of 3,876 applications submitted to financial services organisations in May and June of this year, discrepancies occurred on 17 per cent of CVs.

"There appears to be a trend that the lower ranked the university, the higher the likelihood of discrepancies on a CV," said Ms Kelly.

"Graduates from lesser known universities may feel they need to alter their background to compete," she added.

In related news, the Times has reported on advice from recruitment industry experts, which states that applicants should be as concise as possible when compiling their CV.
