Employers warns against new vocation proposals

New vocational diplomas proposed by the government will not have any greater value to employers than GCSEs or A-levels, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Sales recruitment and other employment methods are not set to benefit from the plans to introduce vocations in humanities and languages, according to employers responding to a CBI consultation.

The new vocational qualifications were described as an "unnecessary distraction" and would "not add any greater value to young people or employers".

"There are also concerns that the over-loaded education system could not cope with all the planned reforms given the lack of resources available," said the CBI, claiming that there are too few specialist teachers.

The CBI has instead urged the government to improve the current GCSE and A-level system to ensure that testing procedures are more rigorous and of high enough quality.

However, employers have given their backing to vocational qualifications based on employment sectors.
