Gap year roles can support CV

Students seeking graduate roles such as sales jobs should seek gap year work that will support their future CV, one expert has suggested.

According to Vanessa Robinson, research adviser with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), it is useful to use time spent to improve future employability.

She said: "That might be some volunteering, or you might set up a business somewhere remotely, it can be a variety of things.

"I think it would be natural. If you can make your CV look stronger as opposed to just neutral, having just had a year off, that can only help."

Research by Year Out Group indicates that a substantial number of over-40s are also taking gap placements.

Meanwhile Elspeth Farrar, of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, suggests that graduate recruitment is still being pursued by many firms.

She notes that 69.5 per cent of organisations have more vacancies this year than in 2007.
