New temporary employment rules agreed

Contracted or temporary sales jobs employees are set to benefit from new rules announced by the government.

Under new recruitment proposals agreed between the government, employers and unions, temporary UK workers will get the same rights as full-time staff after 12-weeks on the job.

According to TUC general secretary Brendan Barber, the new rules will help secure a fairer deal for agency workers.

He told Reuters: "Unions will now step up their campaign to secure proper protection and a fair deal for agency workers."

The government will now seek an agreement with the EU that will allow the new law to become par of UK law.

However, the agreement also has its critics, with many businesses claiming the move will reduce the number of available temporary and contracted recruitment positions such as sales jobs.

Trade Unions had originally argued for 'day one' equal treatment of recruitment agency staff by employers.
