IT suffers female recruitment problem

IT companies seeking to attract the full scope of talent available for sales jobs could be letting image affect their sales recruitment, womenintechnology.co.uk has suggested.

The IT industry's "geeky" and "uncool" image is responsible for deterring skilled women candidates from applying for roles.

Research conducted by Gartner and e-skills UK suggests that the IT industry fails to appeal to many women looking for employment in positions such as sales jobs.

Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk states that many women "are put off by its image".

Contrary to popular belief however, she claims that the industry as a whole offers lots of good opportunities for women, suggesting companies have a good chance of attracting female staff through a good sales recruitment agency.

She added: "We are constantly seeing organisations increasing their efforts to encourage women into the sector."

However, figures from the British Computer Society in 2004 showed that only 14 per cent of its membership is female suggesting there is substantial room for IT sales recruitment improvements.
